There is proof that the US is not the only country with great alternative music. Many bands from the UK have gone on to sell albums internationally. One group that is worth watching out for is the You Me at Six band  from Surrey, England. This is one group that has steadily moved up from a slow start.

The band obviously carries an attractive name, one that should’ve grabbed some attention a long time ago. They might be getting some limelight now but the move upward wasn’t so fast at the start.

The band was officially formed in 2004. Leading the pack was Josh Franceschi who took lead vocals. Rounding up the group were Joe Phillips, Max Heyler, Chris Miller and Matt Barnes. To date, only Phillips has left the group and was replaced in 2006 by Dan Flint. The fairly well knit line up should have made the start of a You Me at Six discography easy. This was not what happened though. Looking back at the band’s history, it seems they took their own sweet time climbing up to their popular status, enjoying small playing engagements in the meantime.

In 2006, they finally saw some recording action as they pushed out their four track EP, We Know What it’s Like to be Alone. A new EP followed in 2007 with four more tracks but a full album was yet to be born. On this same year, the group saw more positive developments as they began playing in bigger venues and to growing audiences. One of their most notable performances was help at the Camden Underworld. This paved the way for more You Me at Six merch.

The rising local support for the group eventually paved the way for the first official You Me at Six band album. Take Off Your Colours was released through Slam Dunk in 2008 and took the 25th spot in the UK charts. Two singles in the album, Finders Keepers and Kiss and Tell likewise took slots in the top 50 of the UK Singles Chart.

The taste of initial success was already clear proof that alternative music could use another band. By 2010, the band had completed another album, Hold Me Down which was released by Virgin Records. This was even better than its predecessor as proven by its 5th standing in the charts. The album sold well enough to garner a silver certification.

The evolving You Me at Six discography saw a new EP added to its ranks. In 2010, they released Underdog which featured the almost amusing Fact-tastic. Interestingly, it is a piece that details the group’s opinion on the inaccuracy of information propagated by various popular sources such as forums and websites. This is perhaps a clear reference to such sites as Punktastic.com. After this piece of work, the band flew by with more releases. The year saw more of the group’s music with the EP Liquid Confidence and the iTunes bundle Stay with Me.

The band might have gotten into a slow start but the gradual band growth might not have been a negative factor. Despite the slow rise, the group is slowly gaining ground with three nominations for the Best British Band at the Kerrang! Awards. They’ll be the top draw in every band store yet.

I can recall when I made it my business to get home on American Idol days just so that I can see who would be winning for the evening, and who would be going home .  I even watched the night that Simon Cowell had some not so nice things to say to now, Academy Award winner, Jennifer Hudson.  I remember many of the seasons as if it were yesterday, but this season, I do not know any of the contestants names, I do not know the name of the newest judge added to the roster, and while I have been seeing hoopla on the Internet surrounding the final episodes, I just cannot bring myself to turn to American Idol this year.

Maybe I have lost faith in the set up of its system, maybe I do not believe that once a person has won, they will go on to do anything greater than most of the other contestants – with the exception of Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken, and the ‘non-winner,’ but truest winner of them all, Jennifer Hudson, who does not need an EPK to let the world know who she is – with an Academy-Award under her belt, as she was not fed the pipe dream story of going on to this glamorous record deal upon winning.  I can’t even tell you why my attitude towards American Idol has changed, but all that I know is that it has.

If I had to speculate why I am harboring such pessimistic feelings about A.I., I would have to say that it is not fair how a person can become an American Idol statistic, after being praised and glorified so heavily on the show, then after their win, a few months later, you never hear about them at all.  So, you mean to tell me that I spent a whole few months rushing home to see who is going to win week after week, until we get to the finale, then a winner is chosen, and that’s that?  Somehow, I feel cheated, I feel as if I could have spent my time doing something other than watching for a winner that will not be heavily promoted once their stint on A.I. is up.  I guess I really stopped seeing the logic in it.

Well, no matter who wins this season,  it is a dreamland for a publicist, and the publicity of being on the show is still great, and I hope that all of those that vied for the coveted winner’s spot, realize that their dreams do not end there, and that they should persevere on to other things…their lives do not begin and end with American Idol, and apparently, neither does mine.

You’re likely to find soothing music albums like solo piano music as one of the choices in modern music stores. Although, you might find them looking odd beside modern pop albums, you’d be surprised how many people buy them. You might have a good idea why they are sought after but the real question is if they are any good.

You can easily see the effects of musical pieces intended to soothe if you look into the effects of songs and instrumental compositions on the human body. Studies reveal that what people listen to for prolonged periods of time can affect mood, mental states and emotions. This is evident in heart beat rates and brain waves. Hence, fast beats tend to promote energy and adrenaline while soothing music tends to support restful and relaxing inner states.

Because there is clear proof of the effects of music on human beings, many different companies that specialize in therapy now use soothing sounds. You can observe this yourself when you enter spas. You are most likely to hear slow music in these places than fast compositions. Similarly, various clinics, therapy centers, treatment facilities and rehabilitation centers now also use soothing music in their facilities.

Therapists and medical practitioners however are not the only ones who can make good use of relaxing sounds. These can now also be put to good use in high stress situations and environments. This means relaxing soothing music is now the preferred dominant sound in medical facilities, dental clinics, labor rooms and corporate offices. It would naturally be a good choice to listen to slow sounds if you are about to undergo a high stress procedure or task.

Slow sounds now also have commercial applications. Advertisers and business establishments are now better able to sell ideas and products because of the right accompanying sound. You would be far more likely to make a purchase if merchants tried to appeal to your senses through a combination of sound and visual presentation.

Of course, there is also some kind of personal appeal to relaxing soothing music. You might want to play this kind of sound in and around your personal space. You can fall asleep to it, dance or use it together with an equally relaxing manual activity such as painting or sculpting. This is a great way to keep your mind and body at ease after a stressful day or to condition yourself before you dive into challenging tasks.

There are different kinds and qualities to calming compositions. The usual standard is classical pieces. Clearly though, not all of the works of masters carry consistently slow beats. You would most likely be able to get better calming quality if you settle for pieces that are specifically made for mood setting. There are now a number of composers who specialize mainly in producing this kind of musical pieces.

Truly, soothing music has found many modern uses. Clearly though, you don’t need a serious reason to just sit back with your player and enjoy the sounds. You can be an avid fan of this musical style for no reason at all.
