Pandora Outside the US

Anyone who has spent any time online will probably have heard of Pandora. It’s an amazing online radio station with a difference, you choose the music. For those of us with slightly varied tastes in music this is a fantastic service. It’s been built around the Music Genome project, it’s difficult to explain but if you’re in the US just go and try it.

For the rest of use accessing Pandora is not that simple ,unfortunately due to music licensing or stuff like that – you’ll get blocked anywhere outside the USA . This has been the case for years, you used to have to verify this by inputting your ZIP code – if it was in America you were allowed in. But this wasn’t hard to fool, just pick a US Zip code somewhere and you were in.

Unfortunately they now check your IP address to see if it’s in the US. So when you try to visit the site, Pandora looks up the location of your IP and if it’s not in the US then you get an apology . It’s rather depressing when this happens and it’s becoming more and more common on the net.

The good news is that it’s very simple to bypass, all you have to do is mask your real IP address and use one from the US. You just have to use some sort of proxy – search online you’ll find lots of information on these. This stops Pandora from determining your location and thus allows you into the web site. You have to do this every time you access which is why using a free proxy can be annoying as it sometimes takes hours to find a good one working.

There are tools to help you find them though , have a look at foxy proxy for firefox, or if you just want instant access try one of the commercial programs which are relatively inexpensive. Don’t get blocked from one of the best sites on the internet, it’s not that hard to access, you can just by using a US proxy. Learning to beat internet filtering and restrictions really opens up the internet.

I know these companies have licensing agreements to honour but it the internet is being increasingly blocked, filtered and censored depending on where you are . I’m too keen on to this to be honest. Better blocked from Pandora without using a workaround is nothing like the poor Chinese who are rapidly heading for a tiny State controlled Intranet.

DVDs and CDs – The Differences Explained

CDs and DVDs are two completely separate and distinct pieces of technology but to the naked eye they look precisely the same. The biggest difference that you can notice is that a DVD can hold a lot more data than a CD.

It becomes apparent how the big difference in storage capacity is achieved when you understand how data is written to a CD or DVD. A laser is used to burn pits around a spiral groove in the disc. Lasers have a wave length and the longer the wave length the bigger the pit. DVD lasers have a substantially smaller wave length than a CD laser. More pits in the same amount of surface area results in a larger amount of information and explains why a DVD is capable of holding so much more data than a CD.

DVDs and CDs are digital storage mediums which basically means that all data is stored as ones and zeros. Pits and lands (no pits) burned onto the surface of the disc are what make up the ones and zeros. When the disc drive is reading data the laser is reflected off the lands but not off the pits. Microprocessors in the disc drive take the information from the laser and convert it into a digital format that your PC can easily understand.

The spiral groove on a DVD is also narrower than a CD. This equates to a longer track and subsequently more data storage capacity. The average single layer DVD holds 4.5 GB of information, while a CD holds only 700 MB..

As the pits on a DVD are smaller the physical make up of a DVD has to be different to a CD in order to allow the laser to focus on them. A thinner plastic substrate is used, giving the laser less material and less depth to get through to the surface.

DVDs will access data at a much faster rate than a CD can. The average 52X CD-ROM drive reads data at 8MB a second, while a 24X DVD drive reads at 32MB a second.

DVD’s are still the format of preference for many people nowadays but expect them to get taken over by Blu-Ray discs in the next few years. CDs are still widely available but I imagine they will eventually go the way of the floppy disk as new technologies keep emerging.
