Rolling Stones Albums- Listen to Legends

Not every musician can remain ingrained in the collective consciousness of society forever. Nearly five decades of Rolling Stones merch  and albums are an indication that this group has taken a permanent place in the history of past and present generations. In the years they have been around, they have made about 200 million album sales and received numerous awards and recognitions.

Like most success stories, this group had humble beginnings. They started out in 1962 as a bar band. The now famous friends Mick Jagger and Keith Richards played as the Rolling Stones along with other members Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Mick Taylor and Tony Chapman. They were joined at a later period by Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman. At this point in their careers, it was Jones who was regarded as the leader of the band. He was also the one who suggested the band’s name. Clearly though, avid fans of Rolling Stones CDs would now most likely know Jagger and Richards better than Jones.

The talented group didn’t take long to grow beyond their initial club exposure. They inked a contract in 1963 with record label Decca. They were able to negotiate for extremely good terms because the label was still reeling from the mistake of having snubbed the Beatles. Unlike other groups, the Rolling Stones were accorded high rates for royalties and were even given solid control over recording materials and conditions. The group was able to release their first album this year but it was not an immediate success. Various criticisms plagued the group ranging from the lack of album originality to the lack of good looks among band members.

The succeeding year was a better time for the band. They took higher positions in the music charts with renditions of the Little Red Rooster and It’s All Over Now. This ushered a new era of band store hits for the band which now include Satisfaction, Paint it Black, Mother’s Little Helper, Ruby Tuesday and Midnight Rambler. As the group grew more popular, there were more requests for original Rolling Stones materials.

At the beginning of the 70s the band had already established a solid foothold in the music scene. They were so entrenched in popular culture that by the time their contract with Decca expired, they were able to stay solid under their own record label. This was not the only major shift in this decade. The group eventually left England and set up base in France.

The 80s is perhaps considered the peak period for the band. This was also the decade when the biggest conflict rocked the group. Previous decades had their share of members coming and going; personal clashes; drug charges and member deaths. The 80s however saw the two band pillars, Jagger and Richards collide. It took several years for them to partially patch their differences. They came together in 1989 as the group entered the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 1992, individual band members followed Jagger’s lead and started on individual career moves of their own. Although they continued to make music together, the group went through a seven year period without putting up new material. It was only in 2005 that A Bigger Bang was released.

Despite the band’s age and dated musical age, there is simply no killing the sales of Rolling Stone CDs. The group is the only one to date that can still claim a top chart position for classic re issues.

The Historical Past of Pokies

Pokies – also referred to as slot machines, slots, poker machines, or fruit machines – have been common for decades.  Initially, they had been simply that – machines that includes a lever that players would pull in order to spin the interior reels, in hopes of matching the reels in a predetermined sample (which might then result in cash payouts from the pokies being performed).

The original physical pokies were invented by an American named Charles Fey in San Francisco, California, in the late 1800s (the exact year is somewhat unsure).  The term for these early pokies was “Liberty Bells”, so named for one of many symbols printed on the pokies’ reels.  They solely contained three reels which had been stamped with five completely different logos.  Pokies rapidly grew to become extremely well-liked with gamblers everywhere, with a demand each for the unique “Liberty Bells” and a wide variety of imitation models skyrocketing in a matter of some years.

Another main mannequin within the improvement of early pokies was also developed in the United States, by New York Metropolis’s Sittman and Pitt company, shortly after Charles Fey’s model was developed.  The Sittman and Pitt version was more much like trendy pokies than Charles Fey’s version; it contained 5 drums and 50 completely different card faces.  To play, gamblers would purchase one pull of the lever for a nickel, in hopes of landing with a good poker hand.  Prizes for good hands were awarded at the discretion of the establishments, with such items as a free beer all the time a preferred choice. The jack of hearts and the ten of spades have been lacking from the “deck” printed on the drums, to be able to skew the odds slightly in the home’s favor.

Many of in the present day’s pokies function fruit logos on the reels (melons and cherries are very common).  This is a reference to a different early mannequin, which paid out prizes of chewing gum.  The logos on the reels were matched to the flavors of the gum awarded when won.

Electronically based pokies started to develop in the mid 1900s. The corporate that pioneered their development was called Bally.  Excessive Hand was an extremely early version of digital pokies – or at the very least partially digital pokies.  The primary true digital pokies were the Money Honey models.  These pokies grew to become increasingly in demand on account of the truth that they did not require fixed monitoring by an attendant, and could principally perform automatically.

Australia pioneered the event of digital pokies that featured second display screen bonus rounds around 1994, with a machine often known as Three Luggage Full. One of these machine was introduced within the United States in about 1996 with the Reel ‘Em In game.

Early pokies had been controlled via a lever on the facet of the machine; gamers would be capable of pull it after paying the machine’s charge, which would then activate the spinning reels.  Later pokies would add a button on the machine entrance that might simply be pressed to activate the machine.  Modern machines continuously include the lever (generally actually working and typically merely for decoration) as a throwback to the unique fashions, however they generally still embrace the button (bodily or touchscreen).

Pies Pasties and Rock n Roll

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal spawned many successful bands such as Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Saxon but what happened to those who didn’t become household names?

Rockwaves.net tracked down one such trooper, Craig McDonald formerly of Sinner who  is still writing and performing. With a new album, Pies Pasties and Rock ‘n’ Roll, Craig has never lost the urge to write and hit the boards.

It’s a rip roaring album and I am glad you decided not to resort to acoustic sets in wine bars, Craig. I can see why that might turn over some green ones. But what was the motivation?

Well things seemed to be getting a bit too serious in music these days so I thought I would try and put the fun back. Simply get together with a couple of good friends, turn up the guitars and have a good time playing some songs I have written over time. I am very pleased with the results.

It’s an appropriate name for a rock album but why the name? Is there an anecdote in there you can share with us?

Everyone who has ever been in a band will be familiar with the concept of finishing a gig and suddenly realising they haven’t eaten for quite some time. Invariably the only thing you can get at that time of the night is a pie or a pasty from an all night garage. I’ve travelled extensively in America which after all the birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll and I just love the road house diner concept which they do so well. So really  the album title kind of sums up my ideas of fun which is after all what rock ‘n’ roll is all about.

Will the band be gigging?

Absolutely definitely! These songs and in fact rock ‘n’ roll in general are best experienced when it’s live. Playing Live to me is what it is all about. I have a great band and we are rehearsing now for a number of gigs which are already lined up to coincide with the album’s release.

One of the top songs on the album for me was The Few and I notice you have recorded it as a video. Tell me a bit about the inspiration for the song? Is it an anti war song?

Well I always try to write songs with having a good time in mind. Having said that I really wish people could be more tolerant of other people’s opinions. Unfortunately it seems throughout history there have been people who want to impose their ideas and beliefs on others and in such cases I believe war is inevitable as there are times when there is a need to fight for what is right. The song was actually written during the first gulf war after watching the pictures of air raids in Baghdad. It occurred to me that really things hadn’t changed that much since the battle of Britain when a few RAF pilots faced death and serious injury in order to to protect future generations. Sadly things remain the same and there are still servicemen and civilians suffering needlessly all over the world because of a few power crazed maniacs. Is it an anti-war song? No, I would say it is more a song to promote freedom and tolerance and help raise the profile of all who are called upon to selflessly put their lives on the line for it.

Who are your main guitar influences?

Ritchie Blackmore most definitely!

So are there any other pies or pasties in the oven?

The cooker is on a low burner with songs simmering away. Seriously I have written lots of songs over the years and still continue to write new ones regularly. I certainly have enough for a couple more albums but at the moment I am excited about this album and just keen to get out and promote it.

Can you let us know who we can get hold of the album?

The album is released on July 19th and will be available from ITunes, Amazon download and my own web site www.craig-mcdonald.com. Physical CDs will be available from gigs and I am currently in discussions with Amazon and HMV. A fuller version of this interview can be found at www.rockwaves.net
